When the Veil Grows Thin: Listening to What We Cannot Always See

There are times when we sense more than we can explain.

A feeling before the phone rings. A knowing that arrives without reason. A dream that stays with us. A moment in nature when we feel connected to something much larger than ourselves (I’ve had plenty of those!).

We don't always have language for these experiences.

But perhaps we don't always need to.

For centuries, this time of year has been associated with exactly this kind of deeper listening.

The Ancient Threshold of Samhain

Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival traditionally observed around October 31 through November 1, marked the transition from harvest into the darker half of the year.

It was considered a threshold, a time when the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds was believed to become thinner and connection with ancestors and the unseen more accessible.

I find something beautiful in that idea, whether we understand it literally, spiritually or simply as metaphor.

Because there are layers of our experience that we cannot always see. And healing often asks us to pay attention to them.

We Are More Than What We Can See

So much of modern life asks us to focus on what is measurable and visible.

Yet our bodies communicate with us in much subtler ways.

A tightening in the chest. A sudden wave of fatigue. A twinge of pain. A sense of ease around one person and constriction around another. A feeling that something is "off" long before we can explain why.

In my work, I see the body as more than its physical structures. We also have energetic systems and patterns that can influence how we feel, respond and move through the world.

Our bodies are constantly communicating.

And when we are quiet, we can often listen.

Nature Knows How to Listen

October offers us a beautiful teacher.

The trees aren't questioning whether it's time to release their leaves. The plants aren't forcing themselves to keep blooming. Nature responds to signals that tell her it is time to slow down, release and redirect energy inward.

We have those signals too.

But we're often so busy overriding them that we stop hearing them.

We push through exhaustion. We ignore the need for rest. We dismiss intuition because we can't explain it.

Perhaps the thinning of the veil isn't only about becoming closer to another world.

Perhaps it's also an invitation to become closer to ourselves. And how wonderful that is.

To notice what we sense before we explain it away. To trust that not everything meaningful needs to be seen, measured or understood before it has value.

Sometimes the quietest messages are the ones most worth hearing.
